eastern mediterranean - Cyprus conducts drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, ignoring Turkey, leading to tensions in the region.

Cyprus Ignites Tensions in Eastern Mediterranean

Cyprus has provoked Turkey by conducting unilateral drilling activities in the Southern part of the island, leading to concerns and reactions from Ankara.

Ankara's Reaction

The Turkish Defense Ministry stated that they are closely monitoring the drilling activities taking place just 22 kilometers south of Turkey's continental shelf. Turkey emphasizes that any violation of its rights will be promptly prevented.

Drilling Schedule

The drilling operations by the American Exxon Mobil company, in partnership with Qatar Energy, are expected to continue until June according to maritime navigation warnings issued by the Cypriot government. Previous drilling endeavors have led to significant discoveries of natural gas reserves in the region.
