Turkish exchange offices closed due to lira crisis

World August 11, 2018 19:27

amsterdam - The enormous loss of value of the Turkish lira now also has consequences for foreigners in Turkey. Several money exchange offices in the country have closed their doors today, local media reports and people traveling in the country.

The Turkish currency has fallen into a free fall in the past few days, which seems to have no end. Since the beginning of the year, the currency has become worth 40 percent less. A trade dispute with the United States, where US President Trump raises import duties for Turkish goods to astronomical heights, does not make things better.

And while Turkish president Erdogan calls on his compatriots to exchange their dollars and euros in lira, and thus to stiffen their own currency, foreigners notice that they can not. The Dutch Ans Baskaya Jonkers reports from Turkish Mugla, where she lives, that the money exchange offices are closed there.
