World April 13, 2018 10:36

istanbul - Turkey has arrested about seventy army officers who would have ties with the controversial spiritual Fethullah Gülen. The newspaper Milliyet reported that the police carried out operations in 34 provinces in the country.

According to the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Gülen, who left for the United States, was behind the failed coup in Turkey in the summer of 2016. The army officers were arrested on the basis of statements made by former soldiers. The officers would have provided accommodation for students who studied the teachings of the Muslim thinker Gülen.

Last month, the United Nations reported that Turkey has arrested about 160,000 people since the failed coup and has fired almost the same number of civil servants.
