'Turkey never becomes a member of the EU'
- Turkey never becomes a member of the EU. Accession talks with the country are officially truncated as Manfred Weber, the leader of the Christian Democrats in the European Parliament, will become the new President of the European Commission next year.
That says the German conservative Saturday in an interview with De Telegraaf. Weber hopes to be put forward on behalf of his political family as a candidate to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker. He makes a very good chance for that.
The accession talks with Turkey are currently flat, with no prospect of restarting negotiations. But Weber wants to put a big red line through it as soon as possible. Formally, government leaders and presidents have to make such a decision. 'But if I lead the Commission, I have a mandate and I say that Turkey can not become a member. '
He is pessimistic about the Brexit. According to him, the chance is that there will be a strong Brexit, without agreement between the EU and the UK. Not because Prime Minister May is unwilling, but because no deal can count on sufficient support in the British Parliament. 'There is chaos in London,' says Weber.
