brussels - According to Bulgaria, US President Donald Trump insisted on higher defense spending at the NATO summit than agreed upon. According to President Rumen Radev, Trump wants member states of the alliance to spend 4 percent of the gross domestic product on defense.

Within NATO it has been agreed that in 2024 countries will spend 2 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) on defense. In the final declaration of the NATO summit in Brussels, Member States reaffirmed their full support for the defense spending objective.

Trump thinks that many European countries spend too little on defense. A source in the White House confirmed that Trump told NATO leaders that they should actually spend 4 percent of GDP on that. According to the source, it is not a formal proposal.

Prime Minister Rutte said that the Netherlands adheres to the agreement to move to the 2 percent. He complimented Trump for the 'strong message' he gave on defense spending. The Netherlands is now at 1.3 percent. 'We will always see if there is room in the budget in the coming years. '
