US President-elect Donald Trump demands that European countries reopen the North Sea for oil drilling, even requiring wind farms to be removed for American companies. Trump made this demand on his social media platform Truth Social.

He responded to the plans of Apache, a subsidiary of the American oil and gas producer APA, to leave the North Sea by the end of 2029.

More and more oil and gas companies are withdrawing from the North Sea, partly due to the British government's plan to increase the extra tax for oil and gas producers in the North Sea from 35 to 38% and extend the levy by a year.

The UK and other European countries have built large offshore wind farms in the North Sea in recent years. However, the offshore wind sector has faced some difficult years due to rising costs caused by technical and supply chain issues and higher interest rates.

Companies like Danish Ørsted, the world's largest developer of offshore wind farms, have scaled back their investments and had to make significant write-downs on ongoing projects.

Shell announced last year that it would merge its UK gas and oil units with those of Norwegian producer Equino in this area, aiming to become the largest independent producer in the British North Sea.
