washington - The US government has started to dismiss thousands of employees still in their probation period.

US Government Dismissing Employees in Probation

The US government is beginning to lay off thousands of employees who are still in their probation period. It is unclear how many employees have been laid off and how many more are expected to leave. According to recent government data, over 200,000 employees are in their probation period. The New York Times reported that the HR departments of government agencies have advised to dismiss the majority.

Dismissals have occurred at various departments including the Department of Education, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Small Business Administration, and the consumer organization. Over 3,000 employees are being laid off at the Forest Service.

The national civil service employs a workforce of 2.3 million people. Approximately 2 million employees were offered the opportunity to resign with pay until September. The White House stated that around 75,000 employees agreed to the buyout. Unions have taken the matter to court to protest against the arrangement.

President Donald Trump has instructed Elon Musk's DOGE task force to carry out cost-cutting measures within the government. Musk's team has been deployed to at least sixteen government agencies, where they have accessed computer systems containing personal and financial information, sending employees home.
