Treacherous Indian flight to UK for fraud

london - The wealthy Indian jewelry retailer Nirav Modi has fled to the United Kingdom and wants to apply for political asylum there. The businessman is involved in a major fraud case in India.

The Financial Times reports on the basis of Indian and British officials that Modi in London claims to avoid 'political persecution'. In India, the justice system is after him. He would be involved in a major fraud case, in which more than 2.2 billion dollars (about 1.8 billion euros) is being pushed backwards.

That would have happened through companies connected to Modi and received illegal credit with the help of staff from the Punjab National Bank, the second largest state bank in India. Two employees of the bank were arrested earlier this year.
