rethymnon (crete) - A Russian who had been reported missing by her family appears to have been bobbing for 21 hours on the open sea off the coast of the Greek island of Crete. The woman sought refreshment with her airbed, but drifted further and further from the beach by a strong current.

Employees of the European Border Guard Agency, who were looking for illegal migrants with airplanes, finally met the woman- about 11 kilometers off the coast. She was totally burned when the extinguished rescue workers took her from the airbed. The Russian was taken directly to the hospital, where she had to be treated for her burns and heart problems.

The husband and daughter of the woman were looking for her all the time. They sounded alarm when the Russian did not return to the hotel in the evening. A search with a jet ski and ship of the Coast Guard was in vain.

When she was finally found, her body temperature had dropped to a dangerous 32 degrees Celsius (compare: a healthy body temperature is 37 degrees). Local media speak of a miracle: 'She survived a cold night with rain and a storm and had to constantly stick to her air mattress. The family was moved to tears when she was saved. '
