tibet autonomous region, china - An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 hit Tibet Autonomous Region in China, resulting in 53 deaths and 62 injuries according to initial reports. More than 1000 structures were damaged in the earthquake.

China's Tibet Autonomous Region was struck by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake at 09:05 local time, with the epicenter located in Tingri County, Shigatse prefecture. The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, resulted in 53 fatalities and 62 injuries based on initial assessments.

According to Xinhua news agency, more than 1000 structures were damaged to varying degrees due to the earthquake.

Following the earthquake, China Earthquake Administration dispatched teams to the region for disaster relief efforts. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the earthquake's magnitude as 7.1.
