The Netherlands does not take children out of Syrian camps

World April 20, 2018 14:57

the hague - The Dutch government is not going to take children from Dutch Syria out of Syrian camps. The risks are too great.

The Cabinet does not want to expose the Dutch to dangers to help correct the wrong choice of parents, according to Prime Minister Mark Rutte. He points out that the Netherlands has no diplomatic relations with Syria. He finds it terrible that children in unsafe areas are trapped by the 'bizarre' choice of their parents.

The government thereby disregards the call of the Ombudsman for Children. He wants the children who are stuck under often harrowing circumstances to be taken away. Doing nothing is contrary to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Children's Ombudsman argues.

It is unknown how many children are involved. A total of 175 Dutch children would be present throughout the Syrian-Iraqi crisis area.
