united states - Election day on the 5th of November is not a direct election, it's a day when the people's voices in the US can be heard. Seven crucial swing states play a key role in determining the outcome of the US presidential election.

As the US heads towards the upcoming presidential elections, the battle for the White House has intensified, with Kamala Harris and Donald Trump locked in a fierce contest for power. The fate of American democracy itself seems to hang in the balance, according to both parties.

All eyes are now on seven crucial swing states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada. These states are expected to play a pivotal role in determining who will become the next resident of the White House.

In the US, presidential elections operate on an electoral college system rather than a popular vote system. Each state's votes are tallied, and the candidate with the majority in that state takes all the electoral votes allocated to that state.

The number of electoral votes each state has is based on its population size, totaling 538 electoral votes across all states. A candidate needs to secure at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidential election.

This electoral system means that the candidate who wins the popular vote might not necessarily win the election, as was the case in the 2016 elections when Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump based on electoral votes.

Traditionally, some states lean towards Republicans (red) or Democrats (blue), making it easier to predict if Harris or Trump will secure the win and the electoral votes in those states. However, the margins in the seven swing states are so close that the outcome is uncertain. Since neither candidate has accumulated enough electoral votes in other states, the results in these seven states are crucial.

Therefore, both Harris and Trump have focused their campaigns primarily on these swing states, with Pennsylvania being the most significant prize with nineteen electoral votes. Every single vote can make a difference in these crucial states, as was evidenced by the narrow victory of Joe Biden in 2020, particularly in Arizona.

In 2000, the battle between George Bush and Al Gore in Florida was even more intense. The legal battle over valid and invalid votes ultimately resulted in Bush winning the presidency by a slim margin.

The fight for Florida delayed the election results significantly, with Gore conceding over five weeks after Election Day. Similarly, the 2020 elections also faced delays due to the increased number of mail-in ballots necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, there has been a surge in mail-in voting, but several states have adjusted their processes to allow for earlier processing of these ballots. Millions of voters have already cast their votes in person in the weeks leading up to the election day.

The results from the swing states are expected to be announced between 1 AM to 6 AM Dutch time. Some analysts anticipate a preliminary result on the night of the election, while others believe a definitive outcome may take a few days.

Apart from the presidential race, Americans will also be voting for a new House of Representatives and a third of the Senate seats on November 5th. The winner of the presidential election will be inaugurated on January 20, 2025, potentially marking the first female president in US history.

Alternatively, the election might witness the return of a defeated president to the White House, a rare occurrence that has only happened once before in US history.
