bangkok - Thai king's son, Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse, ordained as a monk in Bangkok, sparking speculation on the uncertain throne succession after sharing the ceremony on Instagram.

Thai King's Son Becomes a Monk

Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse, the 43-year-old son of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, known as Rama X, recently underwent ordination as a monk in a Bangkok temple, posting about it on Instagram during the important Buddhist holiday of Visakha Bucha.

Throne Succession Speculations

His ordination has reignited speculations about the Thai royal succession. Traditionally, Thai crown princes become temporary monks to show humility, spiritual dedication, and loyalty to Buddhist values.

Potential Impact on Succession

With the strict lese majeste laws in Thailand, public discussions on royal matters are limited. Speculation arises as the king's only recognized son, Prince Dipangkorn, has a developmental disorder, potentially affecting his eligibility for the throne.

Family Background and History

Vacharaesorn, also known as Than Oun, is the second of seven children of the 72-year-old Thai monarch, who has faced controversy due to multiple marriages and personal affairs.

King's Turbulent Reign

King Maha Vajiralongkorn ascended the throne in 2016, succeeding King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He has revived ancient palace traditions and is known for maintaining a complex personal life with a queen and royal consort.
