brussels - The perpetrator of the terrorist attack on Maelbeek Metro Station in Brussels, Khalid El Bakraoui, was also involved in the art robbery at the Van Buuren Museum in Uccle Belgium and the subsequent secret negotiations to ransom.
This writes the magazine Paris Match. It was about a dozen paintings with an estimated value of 1.2 million euros. That happened in 2013 when El Bakroui was under electronic surveillance.
El Bakroui wild over art theft to get money together to fund future attacks. According to Paris Match did an undercover agent of the federal police themselves as agents of the insurance of the museum, to identify the perpetrators and to recover the artwork. The latter is never succeeded. The negotiations broke down in May 2015.
