Tensions Rise in the Middle East After Unprecedented Rocket Attack by Iran on Israel

middle east, israel, iran, west bank, tel aviv, jerusalem - The Middle East is on edge as Iran launches a massive rocket attack on Israel, prompting fears of escalating conflict. Israel vows revenge while Iran warns against further aggression.

The Middle East is inching closer to a full-scale regional war after an unprecedented rocket attack by Iran on Tuesday night, prompting Israel to vow revenge.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard claims that 90 percent of the over 180 ballistic missiles hit their targets. Projectiles were fired at three military bases in southern Israel and the Mossad headquarters just north of Tel Aviv. The exact extent of the damage is still unclear, but Iranian claims are likely exaggerated. Assisted by US naval ships in the Mediterranean, Israeli missile defense systems, notably the Arrow-2 and Arrow-3, managed to prevent significant damage.

The only confirmed casualty appears to be in Jericho on the West Bank, where a Palestinian from Gaza, illegally present in the area, was killed by rocket shrapnel. In Jordan, several were wounded by falling debris. Despite Arab casualties, Palestinians near Hebron celebrated, proudly displaying fragments of Iranian projectiles in Dura. The situation in the West Bank, where Hamas has a strong presence, is highly volatile.

Immediately after the rocket barrage, speculation arose about retaliatory actions. Israeli officials openly discussed potential targets, ranging from launch sites to oil and nuclear facilities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Iran's action as a 'major mistake' and vowed revenge. Tehran characterized the attack as a warning to Israel against starting a direct war with its archenemy. Any Israeli response to the Iranian barrage would reportedly trigger a 'stronger and more painful' reply.

Both sides previously clashed in April, with Iran launching drone and missile attacks on Israeli territory in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. Israel, under pressure from US President Joe Biden, responded cautiously, targeting an Iranian air defense battery with minimal impact.

According to Israeli sources cited by Axios, the country is preparing a 'significant retaliation.' Potential targets include oil production sites, targeted assassinations, or strikes on Iranian air defenses.

This latest Iranian attack on Israel is markedly more severe. While Iran had issued a prior warning before the last clash, this time Israel reportedly had only a few hours' notice. The intensity of the assault has raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region.
