kunduz - Gunmen on Tuesday outside the northern city of Kunduz slain in Afghanistan nine bus passengers and 170 kidnapped. The authorities assume the attack is the work of the Taliban, said a provincial official.

The attackers stopped three buses and forced the passengers to get off. They shot nine passengers dead on the spot and kidnapped the rest, said the deputy police chief of Kunduz, Massoum Hashemi. Government forces later freed most of the hostages during a rescue operation.,, The Taliban have brutally slain nine civilians and captured about twenty, '' said Hashemi.

Responsibility for the attack has not been claimed. The Taliban have consistently denied allegations of attacks on civilians in the past.
