kabul - The Taliban in Afghanistan have executed their sixth public execution since 2021, when the group regained control of the country. A convicted murderer was shot dead with three bullets in a sports stadium filled with thousands of spectators.

Public executions were common when the Taliban first came to power in Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001. However, since taking power in 2021, such punishments have been limited. In February alone, three public executions took place within a week. The United Nations has condemned the Taliban government for carrying out death penalties and corporal punishments.

According to the AFP news agency, Mohammad Ayaz Asad was the sixth person to be publicly executed. He had been sentenced to a 'retaliation punishment' for killing another man. A relative of that man fired the shots in a stadium in the eastern city of Gardez on Wednesday. The governor's office called on officials and residents Tuesday evening via social media to 'attend this event.'
