Syrian status quo continues

And that is holding on for the time being, because hardly any progress has been made at a long-awaited peace conference in Sochi. The main opposition parties were not represented on the Black Sea, where it was agreed that a new constitution for the country will be drawn up. It is not the breakthrough that was hoped for.

Yet the UN special envoy for Syria, Staffan De Mistura, was pleased with the result. His presence in Sochi, however, provided the necessary criticism, because he would thereby legitimize Russian attempts to find a diplomatic solution outside the UN for the seven-year-old conflict.

However, Moscow needs the support of Turkey. President Putin called yesterday with Erdogan about the results of the summit. The tensions between the two leaders have increased considerably during the past week due to the Turkish attack on the Kurdish enclave of Afrin, which was also strongly criticized by France yesterday.

In addition, a Turkish convoy of about a hundred vehicles was attacked in Idlib. According to the official Turkish lecture, the military would be there to supervise a de-escalation agreement with Russia and Iran. They would have been attacked by Kurdish fighters or Shiite rebels; there is no clarity about this. The Turks would have wanted to block access to Afrin in Idlib.
