villach, austria - A 23-year-old Syrian militant of IS carried out a knife attack in Villach, Austria, leaving one dead and five injured.

Knife Attack in Villach, Austria

A 23-year-old Syrian man carried out a knife attack in Villach, Austria, leaving one dead and five injured. The incident took place in the town center, with the attacker randomly stabbing six people using a 10-centimeter blade folding knife. The victims, aged between 14 and 32, included a deceased 14-year-old and three individuals still in critical condition as of Sunday.

The suspect, who has a residency permit, was apprehended shortly after the attack. A 42-year-old Syrian food delivery driver hit the attacker with his car, preventing further harm, and held him until authorities arrived. The Minister of the Interior confirmed the attacker's ties to IS, stating that he was radicalized online without drawing attention from authorities.

Residents laid flowers and candles at the attack site, expressing shock and fear for the future. The incident has sparked calls for stricter migration policies, especially from the far-right FPÖ party, given Austria's large Syrian refugee population of around 100,000. Austria, despite being a rare target for attacks, faced a similar incident in 2020 when an IS sympathizer opened fire in Vienna, resulting in four deaths.
