damascus - A prominent Syrian scientist who was involved in the development of chemical weapons was killed by an attack. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Aziz Asbar was killed in the night from Saturday to Sunday when his car exploded.
That happened in the city of Masyaf in the northwest of Syria. The scientist's driver also died. Asbar was at the head of a scientific center in Masyaf.
Syrian websites connected with the regime of President Bashar al-Assad suggested that foreign intelligence services, including Israel, might have been behind the attack on Asbar. As a result, the intelligence services would discourage the production of chemical weapons by Syria.
