stockholm - Swedish Equality Minister Paulina Brandberg has revealed that she is receiving professional help for her fear of bananas after leaked emails were made public by a tabloid newspaper.

Brandberg had previously shared about her phobia on Twitter in 2020, calling it the 'world's strangest phobia: a fear of bananas'. The leaked emails now highlight the severity of this fear, with Brandberg's staff instructed to ensure banana-free spaces for her. This included removing banana-filled fruit bowls from her vicinity.

In response to the revelations, Brandberg admitted to having a strong aversion to bananas but did not comment on the reasonableness of requesting banana-free spaces. She later confirmed through her spokesperson that she is seeking professional help for her phobia, defined as an extreme or irrational fear of something.

Fellow politicians have expressed support for Brandberg, directing criticism at the tabloid newspaper for publishing the private emails. Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson noted the personal nature of fears and anxieties that politicians, like everyone else, may face, questioning the public interest in exposing them.

Other Swedish politicians, including Teresa Carvalho, have disclosed similar struggles with phobias, showing solidarity with Brandberg. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized his respect for those dealing with phobias and criticized the public scrutiny faced by Brandberg for her fear of bananas.
