stockholm - Sweden has a scientist who is detained in Tehran for espionage and has been sentenced to death for it, in order to prevent any execution of that sentence. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced this on Saturday.

The Iranian doctor Ahmadreza Djalali, professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, was arrested in his homeland in April 2016 during a business trip. He would have provided Israel with information that could assist in the elimination of leading nuclear scientists involved in Iran's nuclear program.

The Iranian Supreme Court upheld the death penalty at the end of last year. According to the Public Prosecution Service, Djalali has admitted having met with agents from the Israeli secret service Mossad to inform them of nuclear and defense plans and their employees.

Amnesty International claims that Djalali spent three months in solitary confinement in Evin prison and was tortured. Last summer, the human rights organization received a letter from Djalali stating that he is being held for his refusal to spy on Iran.
