suriname - Suriname's ruling party, the NDP, is shaping a coalition with NPS, Pertjajah Luhur, A20, and BEP, potentially securing a majority in the National Assembly, sidelining the VHP.
Suriname's NDP Forms Coalition Without VHP
Despite ongoing ballot counting, Suriname's NDP is forging ahead with coalition plans involving NPS, Pertjajah Luhur, A20, and BEP. The potential alliance could secure 28 seats in the 51-seat National Assembly.
Presidential Choice and Opposition
If successful, the coalition may nominate Jenny Simons of the NDP as Suriname's first female president, leaving the VHP in the opposition. The move is rooted in past tensions between Santokhi and Bouterse, with Santokhi's role in Bouterse's conviction for the 1982 December murders being a key factor.
Contested Results and Recount
The VHP is calling for a recount due to alleged irregularities in several districts, delaying the final outcome. As of now, 34 polling stations are yet to be tallied, prolonging the uncertainty surrounding the election results.
