- Research reveals weight loss injections can tackle multiple health problems, like heart diseases and dementia, but also pose risks.

Weight Loss Injections for Health Benefits

A recent American study suggests weight loss injections can reduce the risk of developing over forty different health conditions, including heart attacks, pneumonia, and Alzheimer's disease. However, these injections also have potential drawbacks.

The research, conducted by scientists at Washington University in St. Louis, analyzed medical records of more than 2.4 million individuals, including 215,000 who used weight loss injections. The study assessed how these medications influenced the likelihood of developing 175 different health outcomes.

Data indicated a 22% decrease in the risk of heart attacks, 16% decrease in pneumonia, 12% decrease in Alzheimer's disease, 12% decrease in bacterial infections, and 11% decrease in alcohol abuse. However, it was also found that 19 health problems emerged, such as nausea and vomiting (30%), headaches (10%), and abdominal pain (12%). Additionally, risks of hemorrhoids, low blood pressure, tendonitis, and arthritis were noted.

While some benefits were observed, including reduced risks of seizures and cognitive disorders, the study also highlighted potential dangers associated with these injections, such as increased inflammatory bowel conditions.

Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, the study's lead author, emphasized the rising use of GLP-1 medications worldwide. He underscored the complexity of these drugs, noting their dual impact on weight loss and brain function.

Although weight loss injections were linked to decreased risks of kidney diseases, there was a higher incidence of kidney stones. Moreover, individuals who lost weight with these medications faced heightened risks of arthritis.
