The incident took place in the Kerch Strait, between mainland Russia and the annexed Crimea. The bow of one of the ships is said to have broken off due to the storm. One tanker had thirteen people on board, while the other had fourteen. The tanker with fourteen crew members is currently adrift towards the Taman Peninsula.

Russian authorities have stated that there was no indication of an attack. The Russian news agency Interfax reports that emergency services are working to evacuate people, using helicopters for the operation.
