harrisburg - The governor of the American state of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolf, has declared a state of emergency for combating drug addiction. Wolf regards the problem as an epidemic that has taken on a disastrous scale with the growing use of heroin and certain opiates.

This is the first time that the state of emergency in Pennsylvania has been used for this purpose. This situation usually follows natural disasters or terrorist attacks

The governor said the drugs are now causing more deaths than any other health crisis has ever done. With the state of emergency, which initially takes ninety days, he wants to make it easier for the authorities and practitioners to record and treat addicts. In Pennsylvania with nearly 13 million inhabitants, approximately 5260 deaths occurred in 2017 as a result of a drug overdose. That is a sad record and 15 percent more than in 2016.
