quito - Ecuador has declared a state of emergency because of the unusually large number of Venezuelan migrants crossing the northern border with Colombia. The Venezuelans flee their country because of the economic crisis.
Hyperinflation and the chronic shortage of products and resources in Venezuela have led to an exodus of citizens who travel most across the country to Colombia. From there they continue to the south in the direction of Ecuador, Peru and Chile. According to the government of Ecuador, the country alone has received 4200 Venezuelan migrants every week this week.
The state of emergency, which will last in August, is intended to speed up the use of doctors and social workers to meet the needs of migrants and to assist the police in immigration procedures.
