chile - Chaos ensues as 99% of Chile experiences a massive power outage, prompting a state of emergency declaration.

Nationwide Chaos in Chile

In South American country Chile, a state of emergency was declared yesterday due to a massive power outage affecting 99% of the country. Although the power system issues were resolved hours after the state of emergency was declared, more than 8 million people were impacted by the outage.

Following the return to normalcy, curfews imposed in many regions, especially in the capital Santiago, were lifted.

Countrywide Disarray

Chilean President Gabriel Boric stated that the situation, which left millions of people in distress, was unacceptable. Interior Minister Carolina Toha mentioned that the outage was not due to sabotage, dismissing any notion of an attack and attributing the malfunction to the provider.

Footage on social media showed the outage causing chaos for thousands of people heading to work in the morning. Long lines formed at bus stops, and disruptions in bus and taxi services made it difficult for many to return home.
