Sporting Director Hugo Viana Leaves Club for Manchester City Role
Hugo Viana has left his role as sporting director of Sporting CP, as he is set to replace Txiki Begiristain at Manchester City. The 42-year-old requested an early departure from Sporting CP, where he had been serving as the director of football since 2018. Viana played a key role in Sporting's recent successes, including winning the Portuguese title in 2021 and 2024. He was instrumental in bringing in Ruben Amorim as manager in 2020, contributing to Sporting's resurgence in Portuguese football.
Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas praised Viana's contributions, stating that his work was crucial in establishing a successful sporting project at the club. Bernardo Palmeiro has been appointed as the new general director of football at Sporting CP following Viana's departure.
Meanwhile, Manchester City made significant moves in the January transfer window, spending £180 million to strengthen their squad. The club signed players such as Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Nico Gonzalez to bolster their roster for the remainder of the season.
