washington - The 78-year-old Republican's cases were closed before they even began.

American media had previously reported that Smith planned to resign before Trump would become president, which is set to happen on January 20th. Smith had no intention of being fired afterwards, something Trump had announced he would do immediately.

The cases against the 78-year-old Republican had already been closed before they really started. A judge appointed by Trump had decided in July to dismiss the case involving the secret documents, citing improper appointment of Smith as special prosecutor.

Following Trump's election victory in November, Smith himself requested to halt the further prosecution. This was not because he lacked sufficient evidence against Trump, but due to the Department of Justice's policy of not prosecuting sitting presidents.
