Spanning around Felipe's visit to Catalonia

World June 22, 2018 09:09

- King Felipe of Spain can make his chest wet for a loaded visit to Catalonia on Friday. For days there has been talk of a possible meeting with the Catalan president Quim Torra around the opening of the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona.

Torra wanted a meeting with Felipe to talk about the independence wish of Catalonia. Together with his predecessors Carles Puigdemont and Artur Mas, he had invited the sovereign by letter for an interview. They want to talk to Felipe to heal the wounds since the king expressed strong words against independence at the end of last year. In a televised speech, Felipe said in October that the 'Catalan leaders had violated the Spanish law' and that they showed 'a total lack of loyalty'.

Puigdemont said earlier this week in an interview with El Nacional that it is time that Felipe will listen. 'He clearly did not do that in October. It is tradition that there is no listening. But it is never too late to do anything. Once he starts listening, which in my opinion is not in violation of the constitution, he gives a clear signal that he understands the message of Catalan society. '

The Spanish Royal House has also said that there is no encounter between Felipe and Torra. According to the court, it is not up to the king to engage in political discussions.
