madrid - The Spanish police have, in their own words, prevented an assassination attempt against Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. The police in Catalonia announced Thursday that the suspect is a 63-year-old man. He would have wanted to kill the 46-year-old socialist prime minister because the government has plans to move the body of former dictator Franco, who died in 1975. His remains are in a large mausoleum near Madrid.
In the home of the suspect in the Catalan town of Terrassa, the police found sixteen firearms. He had a gun license and worked for a private security company. According to Spanish media, he has announced his murder plan in a group on WhatsApp. He has been in prison for three weeks, but the police and judiciary in Barcelona did not announce his arrest until Thursday.
