Spanish Coast Guard gets 933 migrants out of the sea

madrid - The Spanish Coast Guard saved 933 migrants from the Mediterranean on Friday and Saturday. The coast guard has also saved four deaths.

The number of people fleeing to Spain to flee poverty and conflict by boat has doubled last year and is likely to increase again this year according to the European border agency. As a result, migration may be higher on the Spanish national political agenda.

The new Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has already taken migrant-friendly steps in the first two weeks of his office. For example, he offered to take the rescue ship Aquarius with 629 people on board to Spain, after it had previously been refused by Malta and Italy. He also promised free health care to undocumented migrants.

The Coast Guard reported on Twitter that it had rescued 507 people from 59 small rubber dinghies in the Strait of Gibraltar, where it also found the four deaths. All other rescue operations took place in the Alboran Sea, between the northeast of Morocco and the southeast of Spain.
