cape canaveral - A SpaceX spaceship carrying two astronauts has been launched towards the International Space Station to bring back two stranded astronauts next year.

A spaceship with two people on board was launched towards the International Space Station (ISS) on Saturday. The spacecraft is scheduled to bring back two other astronauts to Earth early next year. This duo has been stranded in the space station since June.

The rocket, owned by SpaceX, took off from the Cape Canaveral space base in Florida around 19:17 local time. The launch was delayed for a few days due to Hurricane Helene passing through the area.

On board the capsule are American astronaut Nick Hague (49) and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorboenov (34). They are expected to dock at the ISS around 23:30 local time on Sunday.

Hague and Gorboenov will remain in orbit around the Earth until February. On their way back, they will bring back Barry Wilmore (61) and Sunita Williams (59). The duo went to the space station in June with a new spaceship, Boeing's Starliner, which encountered technical issues during the test flight. Wilmore and Williams were supposed to stay in the ISS for about a week, but they are still there.

The Starliner safely returned to Earth in early September with no crew on board for safety reasons.
