South Korean Government Blocks Chinese AI Tool DeepSeek

The South Korean government has blocked access to DeepSeek on work computers, citing security concerns. The Ministry of Defense has restricted DeepSeek on work computers for military purposes. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, a state-owned energy company, has also reported blocking the use of AI services, including DeepSeek, earlier this month. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has limited access to DeepSeek on computers connected to external networks.

It remains unclear if the ministries have taken any actions against ChatGPT. DeepSeek recently launched its R1 chatbot, claiming to match the capacity of US AI companies at a fraction of the cost. Australia and Taiwan have already banned DeepSeek from all government computers, while Italy has blocked DeepSeek's chatbot.
