dubai - South Korean Kim Jong-yang will be the new chairman of Interpol. According to the organization, he emerged as the winner in a vote at a conference in Dubai. Representatives of the 194 member states of the international police force meet there.

Kim is the successor of the Chinese Meng Hongwei. It disappeared earlier this year during a visit to China. Later it turned out that Meng had been arrested there on suspicion of corruption.

The election of South Korean Kim is a disappointment for Russia. The Russian Vice President of Interpol Aleksander Prokopchuk was the favorite to win the largely ceremonial top function. Critics feared that the Kremlin would abuse its appointment.
