mexico city - Seventeen family members of drug lord Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán Loera crossed the US border last week after his son, Ovidio Guzmán López, made an agreement with US authorities.

Son of El Chapo Facilitates Family's Move to US

Seventeen relatives of El Chapo have secretly entered the United States from Mexico, escorted by FBI agents and US Marshalls to an undisclosed location.

Dealing with US Authorities

Ovidio Guzmán López, in a bid to avoid trial, struck a deal last Tuesday with the US authorities, likely admitting guilt to fentanyl smuggling and providing information on other Mexican drug traffickers.

Family's Departure

Under the agreement, El Chapo's family, including his wife, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson, crossed the border with cash and belongings, seeking safety in the US amidst cartel conflicts.

Drug Cartel Dynamics

Ovidio and his brother Joaquín, known as Los Chapitos, led El Chapo's faction of the Sinaloa cartel, profiting from fentanyl smuggling. Joaquín is also negotiating a deal with the US authorities.

Security Concerns

Speculations suggest the family's relocation aims to escape cartel conflicts, with Ovidio demanding permanent US residency for his relatives to start afresh with new identities.

The outcome of this arrangement will be revealed during the court hearing on June 9.
