havana - President Miguel Diaz-Canel reports six fatalities due to Hurricane Oscar in Cuba, with significant damage in Guantánamo province.

Six individuals have lost their lives in Cuba as a result of Hurricane Oscar, announced President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Monday. Details regarding the deaths were not disclosed. The storm caused extensive damage in the Eastern Cuban province of Guantánamo. The communist island has been experiencing widespread power outages for several days.

Oscar made landfall on Sunday evening as a Category One hurricane with wind speeds exceeding 120 kilometers per hour, bringing waves along the coast reaching up to four meters high. Heavy rainfall led to landslides and flooding.

Since Friday, Cuba has been grappling with power failures. The national power grid has repeatedly suffered complete blackouts, leaving the country's ten million residents in darkness. Energy Minister Vicente de la O Levy described the situation as 'complex.' 'The last thing we want is for the entire system to fail again due to a single fallen electricity pole,' he stated over the weekend.

The government announced on Monday that nearly 90 percent of Havana's residents and a large portion of the rest of Cuba had regained power. Power outages caused by fuel shortages are common on the island.
