The results are not expected until Monday. For the post of regional president, five candidates participate. Surveys indicate a neck-to-neck race between the center-right camp and the five-star protest party. The Social Democratic Government Party Partito Democratico is threatening to be penalized.

Sicily is one of the poorest regions in Italy and is facing several problems. In addition to the high youth unemployment, the region has a bad infrastructure, problems with the dump and the influence of the mafia.
