Shakhtar Stalevi: The 'Made of Steel' Soccer Team in Ukraine

Shakhtar Stalevi, a team of Ukrainian amputees formed in 2024, have found solace and camaraderie through soccer amidst the Russian invasion. The team, consisting of players who lost limbs due to war, cancer, or accidents, competes in amputee football tournaments, including the recent League of Mighty in January 2025.

The team's formation by Shakhtar Donetsk aimed to aid in the rehabilitation and recovery of injured soldiers and civilians. The players, coming from different backgrounds and regions of Ukraine, share the bond of overcoming life-changing injuries together.

Andrii H., Andrii K., and Tymofii, amongst others, share their stories of resilience and hope. Andrii H., a former soldier, recounts his injury during the liberation of Kherson province, emphasizing the team's role in bringing him back to life.

Valentyn, a young player who joined after sustaining injuries in the war, reflects on the newfound perspective and appreciation for life that being part of Shakhtar Stalevi has brought him.

Coach Bohdan, who initially had reservations about coaching an amputee team, highlights the players' determination and spirit, noting the positive impact of sports on their physical and mental well-being.

As the team celebrates its first anniversary, they reflect on their progress and aspirations for the future. Despite facing challenges and losses in competitions, the players remain resilient and united, finding strength in each other's company.
