sapelo island, georgia, us - At least seven people have died on Saturday on Sapelo Island off the coast of the US state of Georgia, when a gangway collapsed in the port to a ferry. The incident occurred during an annual event of the Gullah Geechee community.

At least seven people have died on Sapelo Island off the coast of Georgia, US, following the collapse of a gangway in the port leading to a ferry. Local authorities reported that the incident took place during a gathering of the Gullah Geechee community, which consists of descendants of enslaved people.

The gangway connected the dock where people arrived from the ferry to another dock directly linked to the island. About twenty people fell into the water when the gangway gave way. "Seven fatalities have been confirmed," said a spokesperson for the organization managing the port dock. "Several people have been transported to nearby hospitals and search efforts for victims in the water are ongoing." The spokesperson mentioned uncertainty regarding the cause of the gangway collapse.
