russia - Russian authorities issue arrest warrant for rapper Morgenshtern following 'foreign agent' designation for criticizing government policies.

Russian Rapper Morgenshtern Facing Arrest as Foreign Agent

Russian rapper Morgenshtern, known for glorifying drug use in his music videos, has been banned from entering Ukraine. The state news agency TASS reported this week that Alisher Valeyev (26), aka Morgenshtern, was labeled a 'foreign agent' three months after the invasion of Ukraine due to his criticism of Russian policies.

Being labeled a 'foreign agent' in Russia is increasingly used as a political tool to silence critics and organizations not aligned with the Kremlin. Violating the Foreign Agents Law could result in a five-year prison sentence. Morgenshtern's lawyer could neither confirm nor deny the existence of an arrest warrant.

Authorities have seized all of Morgenshtern's properties near Moscow as part of an ongoing legal case. His controversial song lyrics and statements have previously angered Russian authorities, with his remarks on the Soviet victory in World War II causing further backlash.

The designation of Morgenshtern as a 'foreign agent' serves as a warning to other artists and public figures in Russia: dissent will not be tolerated. Despite being abroad, Morgenshtern remains within Putin's reach.
