kiev - Analysis on the Russian advancement in East Ukraine and its impact on negotiations.

Analysis of Russian Advancement in Ukraine

The Wall Street Journal reports that the Russian advancement in East Ukraine is slowing down, leading to upcoming negotiations. The first exploratory talks between Russia and the US are scheduled to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While Ukraine and European representatives are not currently involved, the talks are seen as a potential turning point in the nearly 1100-day-long conflict.

According to military analysts, the slowdown in the Russian advancement is attributed to the lack of camouflage due to winter conditions, making infantry more visible and vulnerable to drone attacks. This has resulted in Russia losing both personnel and equipment, hindering its progress.

Russia is reported to have depleted 48% of its tank inventory and 41% of its artillery, with concerns raised about the condition of its remaining weaponry. Recruiting new soldiers has also become challenging, with Moscow having to increase payments to attract personnel, including those in prisons.

For Ukraine, the recent months have seen limited progress in the conflict, but the country still holds strategic advantages such as slowing down the Russian advancement, control of Pokrovsk, and occupation of Koersk. These factors could strengthen Ukraine's position in negotiations.

The potential exchange of territories, such as Koersk, between Ukraine and Russia is a key point of contention. While the Kremlin has rejected proposals, negotiations may involve compromises to reach a resolution. The involvement of the US adds another layer to the diplomatic process, with a focus on strategic interests and resource-rich areas like Pokrovsk.

As the talks progress, the outcome remains uncertain, with Russia aiming to press Ukraine to end the conflict while Ukraine seeks to demonstrate resilience and attract support from partners like the US. The upcoming discussions will be crucial in determining the future course of the war, with the involvement of key stakeholders shaping the dynamics of the conflict.
