Russia wants to talk to the US about the arms treaty

moscow - In the dispute with the United States about the termination of the INF disarmament treaty, Russia is prepared to work on resolving mutual grievances. This was announced by the Russian Security Council after a meeting of security advisor Nicolai Patroesjev with his American counterpart John Bolton.

Patryshev confirmed that it is important to stick to the 1987 Convention, which prohibits nuclear weapons for short and medium distances.

The American announcement of cancellation was 'a blow to the international legal system of non-proliferation and arms control,' according to the Russian press release. The conversation also concerned the extension of the five-year START agreement by 2021. In that treaty, Russia and the US have made agreements about the reduction of the number of strategic nuclear weapons.

US national security adviser John Bolton will continue his two-day visit to Moscow on Tuesday. The agenda includes an interview with Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov. In addition, a meeting with President Vladimir Putin is planned. One thing is certain: Moscow demands a detailed explanation of the planned controversial withdrawal from the treaty.

The American announcement had caused enormous irritation in the weekend in Russia. Several Russian politicians expressed strong criticism, including the former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, who had signed the treaty in 1987.
