Russia Aims to Maintain Strategic Military Bases in Syria Amidst Upheaval

tel aviv - Russia is making efforts to keep its military bases in Syria, particularly Tartous and Hmeimim, as crucial for its power in the Middle East and Africa.

Russia is striving to maintain its significant military presence in Syria, focusing on the strategic naval port of Tartous and the airbase at Hmeimim on the Mediterranean coast. Despite the fall of Assad, Russia still has a considerable number of troops in Syria, with estimates suggesting around 7000 Russian soldiers remain stationed in the country, particularly concentrated around Tartous and Hmeimim. Rebels have reportedly ensured the security of these bases for the near future, although challenges loom on the horizon.

Recent developments, such as the waving of the revolutionary flag at the Syrian embassy in Moscow and statements distancing from Assad, are raising questions about the future of Russian involvement in the region. Contradictory reports on a potential evacuation of Russian bases have surfaced, with sightings of transport planes at Hmeimim triggering speculation, which Moscow has denied. The evacuation process would be complex, as Russia may not have access to the Bosporus due to geopolitical constraints.

Tartous, the sole Russian port in the Mediterranean, holds strategic importance, housing several warships and a submarine. Despite challenges, Russia has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining its naval presence in Tartous. The Hmeimim airbase serves as a crucial hub for Russian operations in Syria and beyond, acting as a logistical center for supplying arms and personnel to Africa. However, recent shifts in the region have posed challenges to Russian interests, leaving Moscow to ponder its next steps.
