'Rubber rubber duck full of bacteria and fungi'

bern - Rubber ducks used as bath toys are the heaven for bacteria and fungi. This is evident from Swiss and American research.

In the study the swimming microbes were counted in the yellow ducks. When the rubber ducks were then compressed, potential pathogenic bacteria and fungi were found in four of the five toy animals.

The bacteria found include legionella and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium that is 'often involved in hospital infections', one of the researchers said in a statement to AP.

The study, published on Tuesday in the journal Biofilms and Microbiomes, tells that scientists discovered a remarkably high volume of bacteria and fungi in the ducks.

They had the rubber ducks float for 11 weeks in clean water and another load of rubber ducks they had floated in used bath water (with soap, sweat, human bacteria,...). So the result is not there.
