Review: Apple iPad Pro 10.5 inch

- Apple unveiled two new iPad Pro models recently. The 12.9 inch model has remained the same, but the 9.7 inch has been replaced by a 10.5 inch model. What else can we expect from this new tablet?

Although the iPad Pro 10.5 inch screen has grown 20 percent over the 9.7 inch model, it almost does not occur because the edges around the tablet are reduced. As a result, the device is only a fraction larger. The smaller model is still fine. The Retina screen has deep, warm colors, is 20 percent brighter and less reflective than its predecessors.

ProMotion refreshes the tablet image 120 times per second. As a result, it reacts faster to the Apple Pencil and during surfing and gaming. But whether or not this will be used depends on the app in question. When you pause on a webpage, the image refresh will decrease to save battery power. It still takes 10 hours.

Furthermore, the iPad Pro 10.5 inch has a 64-bit A10X Fusion chip, which with its six kernels according to Apple is faster than most laptops. Of course, that depends entirely on the laptop in question. The tablet is provided on the backside with a 12 megapixel camera that can be recorded in 4K videos. For selfies and video calling, there is a 7 megapixel hd camera in front. For storage of photos, videos and files, the tablet has 64 GB to 512 GB of space, depending on the model.

The iPad Pro 10.5 inch can be ordered in silver, black, gold and rose gold. The wifi-only model costs from € 739 and for a price from € 899 there is also an iPad Pro with a SIM card.

The 12.9 inch I found to be great from the start, so I was as scared when the 9.7 inch had to take place for the 10.5 inch model. But the fear was unfounded. The tablet is handy, has a lot of power which reacts quickly to operations. For example, you'll notice the larger apps when browsing. The slightly larger format allows you to work a normal sized keyboard that is fun.

I personally take the iPad Pro to meetings or travel if a laptop is not necessary. It is a good alternative. Apple seems to be getting more and more. This fall, the new iOS 11 adds a lot of new features. The new Files app makes it easier to save files from, for example, your mail to iCloud, Box and Google Drive. Do you have access to all your files in one place. Something which, I think, is a great addition later.

The update will provide you with the Dock, known for Macbook and iMac. Here you have quick access to apps and files of your choice. You can also drag texts, photos and files between apps. Better use is also made of the Pencil. You can quickly create notes without signing in to the tablet.

Although we should wait for these updates, it's clear that this new iPad Pro has been made with iOS 11 in mind.

+ The 10.5 inch has a nice handleable size that fits in perfectly.

+ The Retina screen is beautiful, but with ProMotion, the image also refreshes what's useful while surfing and playing.

+ Good replacement if you do not want to take a laptop on (business) trip.

- Apple Pencil (€ 109) and Smart Keyboard (€ 179) must be redeemed separately.

The new iPad Pro 10.5 inch is a powerful, fast tablet and along with the Smart keyboard, it's almost like having a full-featured laptop with you. With the scheduled updates of iOS 11 this fall, that feeling is further enhanced. If you already have an 'old' iPad Pro, the need to switch is not very big. But if you have a slow, dated tablet and you're looking for more power, this iPad Pro is definitely worth considering.
