valencia, spain - Residents of Valencia are furious at the government for underestimating the emergency and responding too late to the disaster. The blame game has begun as Spain fears the death toll will rise.

Residents of Valencia are expressing anger towards the government for failing to adequately respond to the deadly disaster that struck the city. The recent extreme weather conditions led to widespread destruction and claimed many lives, with 95 people still missing as rescue operations continue.

Despite the ongoing large-scale rescue efforts, the national government in Madrid has refrained from openly criticizing the leadership of Valencia, headed by regional president Carlos Mazón. A government spokesperson stated, "We are here to solve the problems", while also hinting at holding those responsible accountable at a later stage.

Behind the scenes, Spanish media reports that there is a blame game underway, particularly criticizing the delayed decision of the Valencia government to send out a warning SMS to residents, which did not happen until Tuesday at 20:12. By that time, many roads had already collapsed and flooded, leading to loss of life.

The decision-making process of the Valencia authorities, including a press conference held by Mazón earlier, has been heavily scrutinized in the aftermath of the disaster. The initial reassurances and delay in communicating the severity of the situation has sparked outrage among the residents of Valencia.

While the Valencia government argues that they followed the protocols set by the national Spanish government based on information from weather institutions, blaming the delayed response on late information, Madrid deflects responsibility back to the regional government, stating that emergency situations are under the jurisdiction of local authorities.

Residents in Valencia are expressing frustration and placing blame squarely on the authorities for their slow and inadequate response to the emergency. Questions have been raised regarding the timing of military assistance and the absence of a dedicated emergency response organization in Valencia.

The situation has prompted a renewed effort to issue warnings promptly to prevent further tragedies, with a recent SMS alert sent to residents of Castellón de la Plana. Mazón maintains that resources are not lacking but acknowledges challenges in reaching inaccessible areas in the disaster zone.

While the authorities in Valencia continue to emphasize adherence to protocols and have refrained from addressing the blame game until the official mourning period is over, one thing remains clear – the storm of criticism has not subsided.
