germany - A recent study in Germany reveals a record increase in the labor force participation rate of young people aged 20-24, challenging the perception of 'lazy Generation Z'.

Record Increase in Youth Labor Force Participation in Germany

A recent study in Germany shows that the labor force participation rate of young people aged 20-24 has reached a record high of 79.5%, debunking the misconception of Generation Z being 'lazy'. The Institute for Employment Research (IAB) study, based on Microcensus Population data, Federal Employment Agency statistics, and Federal Statistical Office population data, attributes the significant increase in youth labor force participation to a rise in students working part-time jobs. Between 2015 and 2023, the labor force participation rate of students in the 20-24 age group increased by 19.3% to reach 56%. During the same period, the participation rate of non-student youth also saw a 1.6% increase, reaching 85.9%.

Promising for Economic Growth

Enzo Weber, Head of the IAB Research Department, emphasized that the perception of 'Generation Z demanding a lot but working little' is inaccurate in light of the data. Weber stated, 'Young people are remarkably hardworking, breaking stereotypes is crucial.' The increased youth labor force participation in Germany is seen as a promising development for both economic growth and the future of young individuals. Particularly, students gaining experience in part-time jobs facilitates their easier transition into the workforce.
