Recent Spate of Violent Attacks in China Raises Concerns

beijing - A series of deadly attacks in China have raised questions about the mental health support provided by the authorities. The incidents have shocked the nation, with experts highlighting the underlying societal issues at play.

A series of recent violent attacks in China have sparked concerns about the mental well-being of individuals in the country. The deadliest attack occurred in the southern city of Zhuhai, where a driver plowed into a crowd, killing 35 people and injuring dozens. This incident was followed by a stabbing spree in Wuxi, carried out by a 21-year-old former student who killed eight people. Another attack took place in Changde, where a car struck elementary school children.

The wave of violence is highly unusual in China, a country where official figures indicate lower rates of violent crimes compared to the global average. However, the increasing reports of such incidents have raised public safety concerns. Some experts, such as Qu Weiguo, a professor at Fudan University, have pointed out commonalities among the attackers, labeling them as 'reckless revenge actions against society'.

Police reports on these incidents reveal that perpetrators were struggling with personal issues and directed their anger towards unknown individuals. For example, the 62-year-old driver in Zhuhai, who was going through a divorce, had frustrations over property distribution. The Wuxi attacker was reportedly upset over exam failures and dissatisfaction with his internship compensation. The incidents have prompted discussions on deeper societal issues, including mental health taboos and access to mental health care in China.

Notably, online discussions about the attacks have been heavily censored, raising suspicions among social media users. The government's focus on maintaining social order and stability has led to the removal of certain content and experts' opinions calling for better protection for individuals and an independent legal system.

The government's response to the attacks, emphasizing care for the victims and punishment for the perpetrators, has been met with skepticism by some members of the public. Critics argue that the authorities prioritize social stability over addressing underlying social problems, creating a stifling environment that perpetuates societal issues.

Political-economic analysts suggest that the Chinese government, preoccupied with economic recovery efforts and social stability, resorts to control measures that contribute to a cycle of suppression within Chinese society.
